Rutland, often referred to as the Secret England, is a beautiful and interesting county with lots of places to visit for all tastes. Our tourist information section gives many ideas. Nearby Rutland Water provides a wonderful opportunity for water sports, cycling, walking, climbing and fishing and has a nature reserve beside it. Barnsdale Gardens [Geoff Hamilton] is just a few minutes drive away. Nearby Oakham, the county town is “rich in history and character” with some good quality small shops and lots of pubs and restaurants. If you know Lands End clothes you will want to check bargains  [25 – 60% off] at their retail outlet. Melton Mowbray, also a market town, in the other direction is very different in character and is famous for Stilton cheese, pork pies and its weekly market. The towns of Uppingham and Stamford are a must to visit whilst the larger cities of Nottingham, Leicester and Peterborough are all within a ¾ hour drive.
