Rutland, often referred to as the Secret England, is a beautiful and interesting county with lots of places to visit for all tastes. Our tourist information section gives many ideas. Nearby Rutland Water provides a wonderful opportunity for water sports, cycling, walking, climbing and fishing and has a nature reserve beside it. Barnsdale Gardens [Geoff Hamilton] is just a few minutes drive away. Nearby Oakham, the county town is “rich in history and character” with some good quality small shops and lots of pubs and restaurants. Melton Mowbray, also a market town, in the other direction is very different in character and is famous for Stilton cheese, pork pies and its weekly market. The towns of Uppingham and Stamford are a must to visit whilst the larger cities of Nottingham, Leicester and Peterborough are all within a ¾ hour drive.
